Consciousness Constrained

چکیده

the old Union song, “Which side are you on?”1 To paraphrase Huck, you don’t know about David Lodge without you have read Small World, a wonderful and zany romp through the academic conference circuit. There we met Morris Zapp, a thinly disguised Stanley Fish, professor of English at Euphoria State, an even more thinly disguised Berkeley. I read these lines as a new and quite untenured professor:

Implications of resource limitations for a conscious machine

A machine with human like consciousness would be an extremely complex system. Prior work has demonstrated that the way in which information handling resources are organized (the resource architecture) in an extremely complex learning system is constrained within some specific bounds if the available resources are limited, and that there is evidence that the human brain has been constrained in t...

Version 4 Institutional Cognition

We generalize a recent mathematical analysis of Bernard Baars’ model of human consciousness to explore analogous, but far more complicated, phenomena of institutional cognition. Individual consciousness is limited to a single, tunable, giant component of interacting cognitive modules, instantiating a Global Workspace. Human institutions, by contrast, seem able to multitask, supporting several s...

System, Subsystem, Hive: Boundary Problems in Computational Theories of Consciousness

A computational theory of consciousness should include a quantitative measure of consciousness, or MoC, that (i) would reveal to what extent a given system is conscious, (ii) would make it possible to compare not only different systems, but also the same system at different times, and (iii) would be graded, because so is consciousness. However, unless its design is properly constrained, such an...

A Physiologically Based Approach to Consciousness

The nature of a scientific theory of consciousness is defined by comparison with scientific theories in the physical sciences. The differences between physical, algorithmic and functional complexity are highlighted, and the architecture of a functionally complex electronic system created to relate system operations to device operations is compared with a scientific theory. It is argued that the...

Pupil dilation patterns reflect the contents of consciousness.

The study of human consciousness has historically depended on introspection. However, introspection is constrained by what can be remembered and verbalized. Here, we demonstrate the utility of high temporal resolution pupillometry to track the locus of conscious attention dynamically, over a single trial. While eye-tracked, participants heard several musical clips played diotically (same music ...
